Seniors

For too long, society has underestimated older adults when it comes to technology. But the truth is: tech isn’t just for the young—and seniors are proving it every day. Whether it’s learning how to video call their grandchildren, identifying online scams, or accessing essential health services, digital literacy is becoming a powerful tool for seniors to reclaim independence, safety, and connection.

The Digital Divide: A Risk, Not Just an Inconvenience

According to Statistics Canada, more than one-third of seniors report difficulty using the internet or accessing online services. For many, the digital gap isn’t just about access—it’s about exclusion. This digital exclusion can lead to:

  • Isolation from loved ones

  • Increased vulnerability to online fraud and misinformation

  • Barriers to healthcare, banking, and government services

But with the right support, these barriers can be broken.

Our Education & Digital Safety Program: Empowering Elders with Confidence

At The Voice of Our Seniors, we believe digital inclusion is a human right, not a luxury. Through our Education & Digital Safety initiative, we:

  • Host tech training sessions designed specifically for older adults

  • Offer 1-on-1 digital coaching from patient, culturally sensitive volunteers

  • Provide resources in multiple languages, tailored to seniors’ needs

  • Educate on online safety, protecting against scams, phishing, and identity theft

We meet our elders where they are—with compassion, patience, and respect for their lived experiences.

Tech as a Tool for Social Connection

For many seniors, learning how to use a smartphone, tablet, or computer isn’t about convenience—it’s about connection.

  • Video chats ease the pain of separation from distant family

  • Social media allows them to see photos and updates from loved ones

  • Apps like WhatsApp or Messenger help them stay engaged in their communities

And for racialized elders, having culturally relevant tech support makes a world of difference. It’s not just about learning how, but feeling seen and understood while learning.
